What It Means to Be an American

America-
Where consumerism plagues minds.
Where products, beliefs, and agendas
are forced into daily lives through the media.
Where people pass each other on the street,
and look away to avoid interaction.
Where people text and email
instead of face to face collaboration.
Where hard work is amplified by the individual
because relying on others is weak.

Where people are often frightened
outside of their comfort zones.
Where racism, sexism, and hatred of others
is ingrained into the culture.
Where religion is said to be free.
Where the oppressed are beaten down
in an effort to keep it that way.
Where the pursuit of happiness
is about fitting into a mold.
Where hate crimes and injustice
happen every minute.

Where loneliness is abundant.
Where people are crawling out of the darkness,
and crying out for change.
Where there’s a love that lingers beneath it all.
Where the light is found
when the mold is broken.
Where people have the right to rise up,
and fight for freedom, against inequality.

Where a movement of acceptance and love,
is brewing.
Where making a change, and becoming who you want to be
is more than a possibility.
When perception becomes reality.
